Polypropylene geotextiles, like Mirafi 140N, can be used in a variety of applications but you may not expect to find them on a baseball diamond. As seen in the video above, however, geotextiles are being put to good use in that very setting right here in Tulsa.
The Tulsa Drillers have been playing in OneOK Field for years now, but only recently began sharing the space. The Tulsa Roughnecks soccer franchise began play this year, which has introduced a bit of a time crunch. Since the soccer season and baseball season overlap, grounds crews have been forced to attempt to overhaul and transform the field in an extremely short amount of time.
In as little as 24-hour, the field can be flipped from a baseball diamond, complete with dirt base paths, to a soccer pitch with no dirt in sight. Mirafi 140N is instrumental in this process.
Workers begin by leveling the dirt in the infield. To prepare the dirt for about 9000 feet of sod, crews roll out the Mirafi 140N geotextile blanket across the dirt. Just as it would help drainage and soil stability in a roadway project, the geotextiles in this case help to separate the sod from the infield, which makes transforming the area back into a baseball diamond much simpler.
Crews report the whole process takes about 10 to 12 hours, but they have to hope the weather cooperates in order to both get the sod to the ballpark and allow them to install it.
